Vigilante 8's time on the throne may be up before you know it. A couple of the more unusual sites include everyone's favorite alien barrio, Area 51, and of course, the place you'll never drive your car, the North Pole.Īll in all, Twisted Metal looks to be awesome, and car combat fans should take serious gander at the game upon its arrival this November. The rundown includes Washington, London, Egypt, a blimp, and Hollywood. 989 will take players all across the world, to cities that have either already been destroyed by earthquakes or riots (Los Angeles and Tokyo) or are perfectly primed for it. In this latest romp, the designers have taken a hint from Eugene Jarvis' Cruis'n World. Underground terrains, apocalyptic cities, and just-plain weird locales have populated the worlds generously in the past. We're looking forward to hearing all of them, which include both vocal and purely instrumental selections, we believe.Įnvironments Twisted Metal 3 always has been famous for its unusual and well-designed locations. Not all of the final musical tracks are available just yet, but it appears that there about a dozen or so that really knock the paint off the floor. It's fabulously appropriate and wonderfully hard core, especially for a game that is so subtle, and quaint (wink wink, nudge, nudge). Music The music is generated by Rob Zombie, the former leader of the infamous metal band White Zombie. The most satisfying explosions, of course, are those seen when you completely destroy the other vehicles. The cars take damage, too, as portrayed by crumpled hoods, smashed in trunks, and scratched up exteriors.īlended lighting effects appear to be high on 989 Studios' list, as well as a special attention to explosions and solid-looking water textures (pun intended). Great snow terrain at the North Pole, outstanding details to the Washington buildings, and exquisite attention to detail in the cars themselves can be picked up right away. First a number of realistic textures have been mapped across the new environments. Graphics Twisted Metal 3 uses a number of killer special effects to enhance its look over previous versions. In terms of strategy, it appears that one-on-one killing is still the best way to take out the enemy, unless of course, there is more to uncover. That lovely little freeze and destroy technique is still as effective as ever. They're easier to pull off than ever, and with a solid fleet of weapons lying across the terrain, it's easy to just let yourself go. Remember combos? They're are back with a vengeance. And, just as players have asked, 989 created a bunch of levels that are specifically designed for multiplayer get-togethers. That's right, four real live people can hook up via link cable, instead of the previous standard up just two players. Probably the best new (and most addicting) feature is the four-person Multiplayer mode. Also, a handy map identifying the location of each enemy is on-screen at all times. As with previous versions, players can see behind themselves and shoot backward as well, which is key when being tailed. They spin out when taking turns too fast, and flip or lose grip in water or other liquid matter. Cars twist and lurch forward or backward in air when jumping off ramps. With a new physics model, dubbed 'TruPhyics,' 989 Studios has realized a more realistic feel to the cars than in previous versions. That's 11, and there should be as many as 12 cars in total, plus maybe a few bonus cars, perhaps. The big list includes both returning cars and brand new ones: Firestarter (a '50s hot rod), Club Kid (a tiny little Honda), Axel (a giant, two-wheeled standup), Auger (a construction vehicle with a scary front-end drill), Warthog (your standard Hummer), Thumper (a purple low rider), Sweet Tooth (your favorite ice cream truck), Flower Power (a female-driven VW Bug) Grimm (a side-car motorcycle), Hammerhead (a grandma in a four-wheel monster truck), and Minion (six-wheeled tank). ![]() Gameplay As many as 12 cars are available in the game, each with its own built-in weapons and specialties. And with only a little luck, Twisted Metal 3 looks to take it away from Activision's compelling Vigilante 8. Having picked up the game from SingleTrac, which developed the first two versions of the game, 989 Studios hopes to retake the throne of the car combat genre with Twisted Metal 3.
